In Australia, spring begins on 1 September for weather and climate purposes. Yet the Spring Equinox occurs around three weeks later, usually on 22 or 23 September.
When Does Spring Really Begin in Australia – 1 September or the Equinox?
There are simply two different ways of marking spring.
Australia uses 1 September as the practical beginning of spring because our seasons are grouped into three-month periods for climate and weather records. This fits Australian temperature patterns better than beginning the season at the equinox.
The Spring Equinox: Balance of Light and Dark at 0° Libra
The Spring Equinox, however, is an actual astronomical event. It occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator. From this point, the Southern Hemisphere moves into the lighter half of the year, with daylight becoming longer than darkness as we head towards the Summer Solstice.
In 2026, the Spring Equinox occurs on 23 September at 10:05 am AEST.
At the Spring Equinox, day and night are close to balance. At this same astronomical moment, the Sun enters 0° Libra in the tropical zodiac.
The tropical zodiac, used in the Moontime Diary and most Western astrology, is anchored to the equinoxes and solstices. Libra’s symbol, the scales, provides a fitting image for this seasonal balance between light and darkness.
Tropical and Sidereal Zodiac
Another way of looking at the same equinox comes from the sidereal zodiac. You may hear that the Sun is still in Virgo at this time. This refers to the sidereal system, used particularly in Vedic astrology, which measures the zodiac from a different reference point.
The tropical zodiac stays anchored to the equinoxes and solstices, while the sidereal zodiac stays more closely aligned with the stars. The astronomical event itself is the same; the two systems simply use different starting points.
What Actually Affects Us?
The seasons are caused by Earth’s tilt and its movement around the Sun, not by whether we call the Sun Virgo or Libra. What we actually experience is the changing light.
After the Spring Equinox, our days become increasingly longer, the Sun climbs higher in the sky, and the natural world responds with stronger growth, flowering and increasing activity.
So When Does Spring Really Begin?
Perhaps we don’t need to choose between 1 September and the equinox.
1 September marks the practical beginning of Australian spring. The equinox marks the astronomical turning point. Nature unfolds somewhere in between.
In tropical astrology, the Sun’s arrival at Libra marks this balance point between darkness and light before the growing season gathers momentum.
Happy Spring Equinox from the Southern Hemisphere. 🌱☀️
