Some times cleaning windows is effortless and turns out better than at other times when you just can’t get it right. You might even have wondered how this could be the case?

At least part of the explanation has to do with the moisture content in the atmosphere and the moon’s phase and position.

Observe it yourself next time when the moon is moving through a fire sign ( Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). The day has a dry and warm quality, which makes it the ideal time to clean windows. Whereas when the moon moves through a water or an earth sign, the amount of moisture in the air is higher, even on dry and sunny days.

Cleaning and maintenance jobs are best done when the moon is waning, the time between full moon and new moon. Whereas gardening lends itself to the waxing phase, the time between new moon and full moon.

Once we understand this, we can use the moon’s subtle influence to our advantage, e.g. cleaning windows, tiles and floors, laundry and more….

As the keeper of your surroundings, you can choose, plan and use nature’s energy to your best advantage. Housekeeping and maintenance at the right time helps you create an intact, healthy and beautiful home environment without the need to use harsh cleaning chemicals. Instead, the best cleaning recipes are old fashioned ones which your grandma would have recommended. For example Bicarbonate Soda:

Bicarb Soda

Baking Soda or Bicarb Soda is non- toxic, biodegradable, extremely versatile, odourless, inexpensive and widely available.

For cleaning jobs, the commercial baking soda available in supermarkets is fine.

Dishes

Add some Bicarb to your dishwashing water or your dishwasher and you will be surprised how clean your glasses sparkle.

To remove burnt food, generously sprinkle Bicarb on burned pots and BBQs. Add hot water and soak overnight.

Odour

A small dish filled with Bicarb Soda sitting in the fridge absorbs any smells. It works in cupboards and other potentially smelly places too.

Sprinkle and leave it on carpets to deodorise them, vacuum later.

Bathroom Tiles and Fittings

Bicarb cleans surfaces such as tiles, bathroom fittings,  sink, bathtub and toilet. Mix a ¼ cup of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent and add some vinegar, stir to give it a nice thick consistency.

Laundry

You can add 1/2 a cup of Bicarb to your washing powder to soften the water. This mix easily removes grease and stains from clothes and also softens your laundry.

Jewellery

Mix with a little water to make a paste and polish jewellery and silverware. You can also put your silver ring into an aluminium foil dish, sprinkle Bicarb Soda on it and add hot water. It frizzles and cleans gold and silver, but be careful with some gemstones.

Tooth and Hairbrushes

Brushes need cleaning too! Steep them in a jar of water with a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda dissolved in it.
